Edith of Wessex (c. 1025 – 18 December 1075) was the daughter of Godwin of Wessex, a great cause of trouble for her husband, King Edward (later known as Edward the Confessor). In 1051 Godwin was exiled and Edith sent to a nunnery, but they were all reinstated in 1052 and she became a trusted advisor. Her piety is emphasised in the Vita Edwardi. She had no children and her brother, Harold, took the throne on Edward’s death. She was treated with honour by William I after his conquest of Engl…
