Mithras wearing a Phrygian cap, a serpent and a small dog drinking the blood as he kills a sacred bull. Roman Mithraism: a syncretic secret religion of male initiates mainly military centered in Rome ca.1st C. BCE -4th C. CE. Adopted by the Greeks loosely based on Mithra a persian or zoroastrian god, the name is also similar to vedic and iranian gods. This iconography is likely specific to the roman cult. Perhaps a rival to early Christianity. BM
