“Antique Bookplate for Miss Spence’s School. Bold black line borders with antique columns at the sides; in the center ais a seated woman reading a book A motto in Latin is across the top. Design may be by Artist: E.H. Baker? Mrs. Spence’s, a private school for American girls, was founded in 1892. This Bookplate is undated, but appears in style to be from c. late 1890s – early 1900s. Measures: 4 ¼\” X 3\” Good bright condition; small remnant of paper stamp sticker at the top center and words \”N

Francis Fortescue Urquhart (1868–1934) first Roman Catholic tutorial fellow in the University of Oxford since 16th century. Undergraduates in his circle included Harold Macmillan, Evelyn Waugh, Cyril Connolly, Anthony Powell, Harold Nicolson, Quintin Hogg. He is believed to have influenced the fictional characters of Mr Samgrass in Brideshead Revisited and Sillery in A Dance to the Music of Time. Bookplate from Wilkes Collection.
