Lady Painting (1862). Theodor Aman (Romanian,1831-1891). Oil on wood. Museum of Art, Craiova. Aman’s painting style, like that of Delacroix, tends to hover between these two apparent opposite characters: academicism and romanticism. Aman is credited with providing the spark that started the impressionist movement in Romania – again much in the same way that the French impressionists traced their lineage to Delacroix’ use of brushstrokes, color and tone.
